At the start of the last century, the US Navy wanted an Experimental Model Basin for use in the design of a new naval fleet.  They needed it built right.  And they needed it right away. They selected David Watson Taylor for the job.  David's Big Basin tells the story of the construction of the EMB at the Old Washington Navy Yard.  Targeted for a middle-grade audience, this book is currently under consideration by Calkins Creek Books.

Girls and science.  Not an obvious fit to many, but the perfect fit for the SciGirls - aka Emily, Trina, Lindy, and Natalie.  Targeted for a middle-grade audience, this series follows the girls as they settle into middle school and discover that robotics, hydroponics, and the scientific method are actually fun.

It's never too young to do your own version of the scientific method.  At least that's the way it seems to second-graders Emily, Matt, and Justin as these Useless Fact Detectives discover scientific principles they've just got to test for themselves.  My co-author, Ally Howard, and I have targeted reluctant readers with this series.  If kids enjoy reading them half as much as we've enjoyed writing them, science will never be the same!
